“Create space to work on the business, not in the business.”

That is the best piece of business advice Jim Teppen, co-president of Gibraltar, said he has ever received. And it is a maxim that he uses to lead the Gibraltar team in its efforts to provide fast, flexible capital solutions to small businesses that don’t qualify for traditional bank financing.

He shared his thoughts recently in a BizCast video about Gibraltar’s leadership position in the creative-financing industry and its focus on customer service.

“What we pursue on a relentless basis is fostering an environment and culture where customer service is our main focus, where our clients are priority,” he said.

To that end, Teppen said he strives to cultivate a workspace in which employees, who spend a great deal of their time on the phone with clients, don’t leave the office thinking that they’ve been at a desk all day. Instead, he wants them to go home feeling good about helping their clients bridge the credit gap they need to grow and prosper.

“Gibraltar is experiencing sustained growth and we want our employees to be proud of working here. We want them to be excited – because we know that elevates their work and translates to our customers,” Teppen said.

“We’re striving to create brand ambassadors and we’re dedicated to building a culture to achieve that,” he added.
